Cognitive Science Major & Focal Areas

Declaring a Major

To declare a cognitive science major, email Dr. Colin Wilson, Director of Undergraduate Studies, to make an appointment. Please bring a declaration of major slip. These can be obtained in the Office of the Registrar or Office of Academic Advising in Garland Hall.

Cognitive Science Major Requirements

The required courses for Cognitive Science Majors are divided into five general areas as described below. The program is structured so as to ensure some exposure to each of the five areas. In addition, it provides in-depth training in two of the areas, deemed focal areas, chosen by the student. Majors thus acquire a broad perspective which will enable them to situate particular research disciplines within the overall study of the mind/brain.

Focal Areas:

  1. Cognitive Psychology/Neuropsychology
  2. Linguistics
  3. Computational Approaches to Cognition
  4. Neuroscience
  5. Philosophy of Mind

The three areas not selected as focal areas are loosely referred to as non-focal areas for advising purposes.

Majors must also complete one of two math options and one foreign language through the intermediate level OR two foreign languages through the elementary level. Visit the Academic Catalog for the complete major requirements.
